When you live in a state where you have to file a state tax return, TurboTax takes the information you've already provided for your federal return and populates relevant portions of your state return, including information returns such as Form 1099R.
I don't think that is correct for the following reasons:
1) When I e-file my state return, I always receive a letter from the state requesting copies of my 1099s. Every time. It's pretty obvious they are not getting the information they need.
2) Turbotax prompts me to attach copies of my 1099s when I file (hence the original question). If that is done automatically, why the prompt?
I've been down this road many times, with the same result every time... "please send us copies of your 1099s". So I'll ask the question in a different way. Where do I find the option, when e-filing my state return, to attach pdf's of my 1099s to that return? Or does that option not exist?
Unfortunately, TurboTax does not support attaching a pdf to your tax return. If you need to attach a pdf to your return, you will need to print your return and mail it.
To print a copy of your return, please click on Tax Tools from the menu on the left-hand side and then click on Print Center. Click on Print, save or preview this year's returns.
Thanks for the reply. I came to the same conclusion and filed via regular mail. Might be something Turbotax could address, if only for us retired PA residents!
