I filed my 2023 TY returns on October 15, 2024. I shared the healthcare marketplace plan with my son who files his own taxes. Turbotax home and business said "Since this is a shared policy, we need to know how to allocate the policy amounts". Turbotax suggested that we can attribute the premium, SLCSP and Advanced Payment of PTC percentages as we wished. I put 1% for each for my return and 99% for my son's return as this gave both of our returns the best tax break.
Now, I got this notice from IRS saying that the amounts reported on Form 8962, Premium tax credit, Part II, columns (a) - enrollment premiums, (b) - applicable second lowest cost silver plan (SLCSP) premium, or (f) - advanced payment of PTC, don't match the information we have on file from the Health insurance marketplace.
The numbers produced by turbotax automatically for Form 8962 are obviously the 1% that was my allocation.
Please note that my son has not received any notice and has received his refund, therefore I assume his return is all good.
Where is the problem? Thank you in advance for any explanation on why I got this notice and was I incorrect in claiming the percentage distributions as we did? The tax community clearly has the position that we can divide up the premium, SLCSP and Advanced Payment of PTC percentages as we deemed fit.
