(Last year) A week after I filed I received a letter informing me I was not allowed to claim my dependent. Is there any reason why?

I want to file this year and claim the same dependent, but i'm worried the IRS will deny my dependent.

My dependent is underage, and is a US citizen.

If the IRS did disallow your EIC, you may need to file Form 8862 before the Internal Revenue Service allows you to use the credit again.

IRS Form 8862Information To Claim Earned Income Credit After Disallowance, is a form which a taxpayer must complete and attach to their federal income tax return if:

  • their Earned Income Credit (EIC) was reduced or disallowed for any reason other than a math or clerical error for a year after 1996, and
  • they want to take the EIC and meet all the requirements

Please see the following TurboTax guide to filing Form 8862 after a prior disallowance of the EIC:

IRS Form 8862 and instructions on how to file it may be found here:

With that being said, would I have to go with a professional tax preparer?

Thank you, I appreciate it.

 I have two more questions...
How can I upload expense receipts during the filing process?

This year I want to file my W2's from my employer, but I also want to report a certain amount of money for self-employment. Would I have to file separately? If so, how is that done?
