Not your W-2, your W-4. Your W-2 is a year end statement of earnings. Your W-4 is a form that helps your employer calculate the right amount of tax to withhold. Checking married when you are single will decrease the amount of tax withheld, and so also decreases your year end tax refund or increases your year-end amount due. But the W-4 is not binding and has no effect on your tax return other than in the amount of withholding.
Most employers will take a new W-4 at any time, if you want to adjust your withholding for the rest of the year.
