My son filed a return after I paid the $504 due from my first return!

That makes no sense.  Your son's tax return could not give you a tax refund.  Your son's tax return could only give HIM an income tax refund.    So we are missing some part of the story.  What else happened with your own tax return, your son's tax return (and was he claimed as a dependent on your tax return?)  Did you receive a stimulus check and are you confused that it was an income tax refund?

Since you cannot file an original return twice  he must have  amended the return ... so  did you look/review the return ?   What did he change?

It must be true that an e-Filed return will jump ahead of a paper return waiting for processing.

Then later , will IRS reverse the order and recalculate, discarding the e-Filed return ?
