My refund went to someone else’s account

How did you request to receive your federal tax refund?

Did you also request to have any TurboTax account fees paid from the federal tax refund?

My refund went to someone else’s account

While the IRS has no rule that says a refund cannot be deposited into an account without your name on it, most banks have fraud prevention measures in place that will not allow this. If your refund went into another person's account and the bank did not reject it you will have to work directly with the bank. Here is what the IRS has to say:

"You incorrectly enter an account or routing number that belongs to someone else and your designated financial institution accepts the deposit. You must work directly with the respective financial institution to recover your funds. See the last solution bullet below."

"If funds aren't available or the bank refuses to return the funds, the IRS cannot compel the bank to do so. The case may then become a civil matter between you and the financial institution and/or the owner of the account into which the funds were deposited."

My refund went to someone else’s account

did you ask to have your fees deducted from your refund? if so, the refund goes to a third-party bank. TurboTax fees are deducted and the balance is sent on to the account you specified.

My refund went to someone else’s account

my name is Gale [PII removed].

I noticed that there was a bank account added to my tax return with my name on it but it's not mine. My refunds were supposed to go to my cash app account. I never got my refund and I'm homeless I need my money is there any possible way to get my refund onto my cash app account?

My refund went to someone else’s account

@Gale73 If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund then the banking information on the tax form is the information to send your refund to the third party bank.  That bank gets your refund first from the IRS.  They take out your TurboTax fees and send the rest to you---and that bank has YOUR direct deposit information.

When you choose "refund processing"   TurboTax gets its fees when the IRS releases your refund.  Your refund goes to the third party bank.  The bank takes out your fees and then that bank sends the rest of the refund to you.
