My job took out federal but not state because I didn’t realize I had it as exempt for 4 months. I corrected it today when I received my W2. What will happen to me?

I honestly didn’t know. I know I’ll have to pay the state back. Will I be penalized or go to jail? I fixed the situation today.

You certainly won't go to jail.  There may be a small penalty on your state tax return for underwithholding your state tax.  It's not a crime though, millions of people make mistakes on their W-4 forms, so don't worry about it.
