My husband was self employed for 2015 but did not work for 2016. How should he file taxes?

If he had no income in 2016, then he is not required to file a tax return as married filing separately. He can still file a tax return with his spouse, as married filing jointly. There is no income requirement to qualify to file as married filing jointly.
