For refund or a tax due? Check all your W2 boxes 16 & 17. And any 1099 for state withholding.
I should have a refund of about $20 but TurboTax shows my refund as $176,553. Totally out of the ball park. Rechecking boxes 16 and 17 though....
You probably entered too much withholding. Like left the decimal point out. Don't enter the cents.
It's also possible that you entered too little income, so check those figures as well.
I'm starting over and just uploading my W-2. See if that fixes things! I shouldn't have a State refund of more than $20 or so. Thank you so very much for your help!
It's just as fast and easy to manually enter a W2. And the import might come in wrong. You could have manually entered it in the time it took trying to import it and posting this question.
Don't try to import it. At the bottom pick Change How I enter my Form
Then on the next screen pick I'll Type it in Myself
To add a W2 just type w2 (small W) in the search box at the top of your return and click on Jump To the W2
OR To Add a W2 enter it under
Federal Taxes on the left side
Wages & Income
Then Wages and Salaries- Click the Start or Update button
Then if you are married you should have 2 buttons...Add w-2 for (taxpayer name) and Add w-2 for (spouse name). Click on the correct button to add a W-2.
Thank you so very much for everyone's help! I did start over and uploaded my W-2. Everything looks correct now, with a State refund of only $36 (whew). One difference with uploading was in the codes for Box 14. With the V codes, the dropdown had to be Code U,V,W,X,Y,Z. Otherwise no differences. Thank you again everyone! Stellar suggestions and quick help. 😀
@VolvoGirl is correct. Easy to enter and easy to have a wrong number. Always double check every entry for uploaded items. It sounds like the withholding amount was very wrong! When entering manually, it is easier to round to the nearest dollar to avoid that decimal. The IRS requires all fields rounded to the nearest dollar and the program does it for you but you certainly can round and avoid some trouble.
