Replying to my own message here since the initial message was character-limited.

 

Yes, I've called the IRS.  "Due to extremely high call volume, your call cannot be completed.  Go to www.blahblahblah."

Yes, I've been to the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/refunds) and tried the "Check my refund status" button.  Entered SS#, entered type of filing (single, married filing jointly, etc.) and entered the original refund amount (amount before amendment).  Result:

That would all be fine except for the fact that it's been "under review" for over six months.  I know it's COVID and all, but is there some way to see what the exact problem is?

This is the most recent information available on the IRS website regarding the status of their operations. 

 

See the section titled Filed an Individual Tax Return (Form 1040) for tax year 2019 or tax year 2020...for more information as it relates to your situation.

You can also try connecting with a taxpayer advocate at this point.  They will be able to assist you as they will have access to more information as it relates directly to your specific tax return and situation.
