When you use TurboTax Desktop (TTD), the only copies of your returns are on your computer. These files will have the extensions .tax or .pdf. You will need to open the files with the software you used to create them. For 2015 returns with the extension .tax2015, you will need your copy of TTD 2015 to open them. Returns with the extension .pdf can be read by Adobe Reader.
To search for your returns:
Mac:
In Finder or Spotlight, search for one of the following key items: .tax2015, Tax Return, the taxpayer’s first or last name, and TurboTax.
Windows:
Try searching the computer, external drives, and or thumb drives or DVDs you may have saved the files to, using the same search terms as for a Mac.
TurboTax Online (TTO) only saves one file per year per user name, so if you cleared the previous data in order to create a new return under the same user name, then only the last return you completed will be found in the TurboTax cloud storage.
If you still cannot find a copy, you can also get free transcripts of your federal returns from the IRS; each state return must be accessed separately.
