The only way to know is to prepare the returns both ways ... just remember that if one of you itemized deductions the other must as well. Also MFS disallows many credits and has a higher tax rate.
When using the ONLINE program means you must start 2 separate online accounts to test the MFS status. You cannot use the current online joint account easily.
It could be, if your Roth conversion resulted in a much larger taxable income that you both share tax on when filing jointly.
