Is there a way to report that I got married in October of last year so that my premium tax credit is accurate and the taxes due are correct?

Last year I qualified for the tax premium credit through the health market place. In October I got married. Now it says that I have to repay over 1500. Although I think this is incorrect because I was not married for the whole tax year. How can I make sure this is accurately accounted for?

Unfortunately, this is how the tax laws work.

If you got married in 2018 and file a joint return with your spouse, the combined income of the couple is used to calculate the premium tax credit and whether you have to repay any of the advance tax credit back. This happens to most couples who get married during the year and file a joint return. You can try and simulate filing as Married filing Separately to see whether it could save both of you some tax.
