Is there a way to file a w2 after you already file your taxes? I got two w2 in the mail from the same company but filed one already and the amount of each is different

I just got both w2 in the mail but was only sent one w2 or saw one when I went to them weeks ago for my w2

Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?”  If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet.  You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

The Form 1040X you need becomes available in late February,  But wait until your return has been processed.

Is there a way to file a w2 after you already file your taxes? I got two w2 in the mail from the same company but filed one already and the amount of each is different

You asked "Is there a way to file a w2 after you already file your taxes? "

  • Yes, but it will require you to file an Amended return.
  • I'll give you the procedure below.

You also said "You got two w2 in the mail from the same company but filed one already and the amount of each is different."

  • Yes, they both should be included on your tax return.
  • Did you have some disability or family leave payments that generated the second form?
    • If Boxes 1-8 on the W-2 are the same,
    • You should only post one box 1 - 8
    • Then post everything else on both forms.
  • If boxes 1 - 8 are different
    • You should add them together.
    • Then post everything else from both forms.

If you want to make changes, or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
    • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
    • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Sign in to TurboTax

  1. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and
  2. select the year you want to amend
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then
  4. Amend using TurboTax Online
    1. If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax CD/Download below instead.
  5. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending and Continue.
  6. When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the info you need to change.
  7. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.

I amended it after I got my refund but I didn’t get my state refund for some reason. My federal amended return was accepted 10 mins after I filed it but my amended state is saying I need to mail it. Do you know why I have to mail my amended state but my federal was filed online by turbo tax, and why I haven’t gotten my state return yet? Also would I get my amended federal tax return even if I don’t mail my amended state?

I just check my mail and I had a letter from department of taxation about my state tax and how they needed my help to make sure the information was correct so they can issue my refund.

Yes, you will still receive the refund from your amended federal return even if your state return hasn't been processed yet.

When you contact your State about the letter you received, be sure to let them know that you received a second W2 since filing the return and have amended your federal return.  The State will advise you if they can make the adjustment to your return directly or that you need to file an amended state return.
