What do you mean by "file a claim"? Are you needing to add more information to your already filed return?

Well, I wasn't aware that I could claim the laptop I bought for school as an expense. Is it too late to go back and add it?

If you've already filed you have to amend your turn to make any changes. You cannot e-file an amended return.  They have to be mailed, and it takes about 16 weeks for the IRS to process an amended return. 3 weeks after you mailed your amendment, you can start tracking its progress at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? site.
