No, amending will not accomplish that.  But you can get a 6 digit IP PIN from the IRS so that no one else can use your SSN on a tax return.

If your Social Security number is compromised and you know or suspect you are a victim of tax-related identity theft, take these additional steps:

• Respond immediately to any IRS notice; call the number provided.
• Complete IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit. Then print and mail or fax according to the instructions. 
• Continue to pay your taxes and file your tax return, even if you must do so by paper.

If someone claimed you for 2023, and they could not /should not claim you ---if they filed first your e-file will be rejected.  If that happens, you need to file on paper and mail your return.  The IRS will sort out the duplicate use of your SSN.

Print, sign and date your return in ink, and mail it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Thank you for the clear and detailed response! I should rephrase my question to add that noone has claimed me on their taxes. Rather, I misfiled them to indicate that someone could claim me as a dependent, but I've since learned that I shouldn't have. Is there any way to reverse this?

Yes, you can amend your return.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted, you should follow these guidelines. 

• You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed. 
• You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return. 
• Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
