IRS adjusted down my refund accusing miscalculation of child tax credit
TurboTax computed my return forms, which I had to print and mail because IRS rejected the e-file. After 4 months the refund came in, short by about $654. The explanation:
"We changed the amount claimed as child tax credit and credit for other dependents on your tax return because you either didn't enter an amount or entered an incorrect amount based on the number of boxes you checked on page 1 of your tax return. (249D)"
This is as clear as mud. This was the first year I worked with TurboTax and the first time my refund was adjusted. What's TT's accountability? Do I get any assistance in reviewing my return?

TurboTax can only calculate based on your input. Check the dependents information on page 1 of your 1040 as well as the information that you entered for each dependent in the dependent information windows.

Since you got a refund, albeit smaller, there is no penalty, so the TurboTax Accuracy Guarantee does not apply.

Review the return ... which line is this amount on the return ? When you mailed in the return did you include the form 8812?

Thats a funny way to define accuracy. I got the same IRS denial. I see nothing wrong on the forms that I understand, I rely on Intuit knowing there stuff.

we can't see your return or the IRS notice. about all you can do is call the IRS to get an explanation if it is not clear from the notice. you may have to make many attempts because the IRS phone lines are overloaded - too many callers - too few agents to handle them
800-829-1040
First choose your language.
Then 2
Then 1
Then 3
Then 2
When asked for SSN do nothing it will ask twice
Then 2
Then 4
then wait to see if an agent picks up or you are disconnected.

@nk70ca You have posted to someone else's thread. The original poster had an issue regarding the child tax credit. We cannot see your tax return or your account, nor do we know what the IRS changed on your tax return. The IRS does not tell TurboTax when they change your refund. If you got a letter from the IRS about your refund then it should explain what they changed and why. Was your refund reduced for the child tax credit---or for some other reason? Lots of people have had reduced refunds related to the recovery rebate credit.

It looks like they didn't process Form 8812 as that total ($5600 in my case) is the amount that was reduced.
The note was "We changed the amount claimed as child tax credit and credit for other dependents on your tax return because you either didn't enter an amount or entered an incorrect amount based on the number of boxes you checked on page 1 of your tax return (249D)". Shouldn't be possible as TurboTax filled it out. I had a lot of deductions this year (adoption credit, solar energy credits, etc) so there wasn't much for the child tax credit to reduce. So essentially it brought me to 0 taxes and denied the additional credit from Form 8812.
I'll call IRS on Monday but I can't spend forever on hold.

If you do get on hold early in the morning, plan to wait around 50 minutes or more.
