This should not change your credit if your income is below the threshold. Review the details in the link below, then compare that with your Adoption Credit section of your tax return.

Also review your Form 1040-X for the original figures and the changed figures.

You may receive less than the full amount if some of your adoption expenses are covered by an employer plan or your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is over $259,190 (and is phased out at $299,190) for 2025.

I agree, but nonetheless the refundable credit from Form 8839 is not properly imported on Line 15 of the 1040-x form.

Even worse if I go to thr Forms view and enter the correct value fails on the error check stating Lune 15 should be left blank.

This should be easy for Intuit to replicate and confirm the bug and rectify.

If you can, can you send me a token so I can see specifically why you aren't being allowed the credit.

TurboTax Online

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. In the left-hand menu, select Tax Tools, then click Tools.
  3. In the pop-up window, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining that your personal information (SSN, name, address) will be removed. Click OK.
  5. A  token number will appear on the screen. Give this number to the agent you are speaking with.

TurboTax Desktop (Windows/Mac)

  1. Open your tax return in the TurboTax software.
  2. In the top menu bar, click on Online.
  3. Select Send Tax File to Agent... from the dropdown menu.
  4. The program will sanitize your data and then display a  token number.
  5. Write this number down or keep the window open to provide it to the support agent. Reply back in this thread and let us know what the token number is.

It looks like part of the token was removed when this was sent. Can you provide me with the token number?

I think it automatically masks it if it happens to be a 9 digit number (same amount of digits as SS #).

Hopefully the above works for you

Thanks!

Contrary to Intuit stating the token number is a 6 digit number it comes up as a 9 digits-8 digits.

Intuit also disallows screenshots in this thread.

To clarify, what change did you make in the amendment? Did you generate it for the purpose of claiming your $5000 adoption credit or did you make other changes?

Here are some things I found in your return that will make a difference.

  1. Go to Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Adoption Credit and revisit the questions
  2. Click Edit in the next screen next to the entry.  It says it's looking for additional information.
  3. Now enter the birth year of your child in the next screen.  That entry looks empty.
  4. Next screen asks when you began adoption proceedings.  Make a choice here.
  5. Next screen asks when the adoption was finalized. Here you must say 2025 to receive the credit. Once I made this choice, your adoption credit magically appeared. Your Kansas refund amount also dramatically increased.
  6. The next screen will ask if you filed Form 8839 in 2024. If you did, there will be a few more questions based on that form.
  7. Now review each of the remaining answers.
  8. Now when everything is said and done, your adoption credit of $17,280 is restored.
  9. I now see your refundable credit of $5000 is reported on the 1040 Line 30 and the non-refundable credit of $12,280 is reported on line 20 of the 1040 and in Schedule 3 line 8.

Keep in mind, you will need to make these changes in your return. I say this because many assume we can make changes on this end. What we do is for diagnostic purposes only, but it doesn't affect your return, which is a good thing for both of us.

Thank-you for the attempt.

That definitely does not work for me.

I clicked edit and all of the information was already there.

I even deleted it and re-entered the information from scratch with the same result.

Strangely it shows an adoption credit for the full $17,280.00 on the form 8839, but on the 1040x line 15 column C, it shows up as blank, and it should say $5,000.00.

It is apparent to me this is a bug in Intuit's software, and I have updated to make sure a recent fix did not correct it, and it hasn't.

With Intuit being such a software giant surely they can setup a remote session and help debug this thing directly. Maybe the bug only appears on certain hardware/OS configurations. In case it matters I am running Turbo Tax on Windows 11 (fully updated), on a Microsoft Surface with an ARM (Snapdragon) Processor.

Additional Clarification --

Everything does and did show up correctly on my From 1040.

It was when I amended the return the issue appeared on Form1040X on Line 15 column C.

The Form 8839 still shows the correct credit of $17,280.00. $5,000.00 on Line 13 and $12,280.00 on Line 18.

The Line 13 credit should automatically transfer to Line 15C on the 1040X but it doesn't, and switching to form view and trying to force the correct value disallows it from verifying.
