We deducted $25.00 state income tax for 2016 returns. With a gross income around 100,000 we should have been instructed to deduct sales tax somehow we missed it.

Can we amend the 2016 returns assuming we can deduct the sales tax from irs table  for a larger amount than the meager state tax.

Does not the turbotax automatically suggest to go for sales tax when it sees a small amount paid in state taxes and the sales tax is higher?

If you are itemizing and your schedule A shows $25.00 then you can amend for the larger deduction.
Or, if you are not itemizing but you are right on the cusp and your default sales tax deduction will let you itemize, you can amend but your refund will be smaller.

You have to proactively go to the Sales Tax section under Deductions and Credits: Estimates and Other Taxes. I wish TT would make it more prominent.

Yes TT can definitely sense from the data it already has that the taxpayer should go for sales tax deduction and not income tax for state By missing this I guess you miss the refund for property Home tax you pay because that refund comes from the state tax entry Thanks for the reply Now for 2017 I will proactively opt for sales tax Last year to get the best benefit for this deduction since laws have changed for 2018

Will Turbo tax itself comment on this?
