I've only received my state return, even though i filed at the same time and can't track my federal return, is it missing of just backlogged?

Turbo Tax will not have a status on your refund. If the IRS website says processing, this means they are working on it.

but if it doesn't say processing, and that they can't track it either, how long do i wait until i assume it got lost in the mail or i made a mistake filing? and what would be the next step?

Did you mail your federal return?  How long ago?  Did you use any kind of tracking to know that it was received--did you use certified mail or UPS to mail it?

It takes at least four weeks after you mail it for it  to show up on the IRS refund site.  

TurboTax will not know anything about your mailed return, and will continue to show “Ready to Mail” on your account.  TurboTax will not know that you put your tax return in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or emailed) returns.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.
