Don’t go through the nightmare of amending and possibly holding something else up. The IRS is. STILL. Issuing refunds for unemployment but it’s not a priority right now. They’re done periodically in batches and not even an amendment will change that. I’m sorry you and many other people are still waiting for it but it’s not going to come any faster especially in the middle of a chaotic tax season. Amending is a long delayed process that unfortunately can’t issue an unemployment refund. It’s aggravating but the IRS is not funded nor prepared to handle this workload. Congress cuts the funding and add to their responsibilities. The IRS answered 6% if it’s calls last season. 6%! Any other company would be out of business. SMH
No, don't file an amended return. The IRS has a backlog of 11 million 2020 returns that still need to be processed. You can go online and request an online transcript of your return to see if your unemployment change has already been processed. If it hasn't, you'll just have to continue to wait.
Please see: How do I get a copy of my tax return or transcript from the IRS?
