You may or may not need to amend.  What did they change?  What boxes are different?

"I received a w2 correction in the mail for my 2000 return and need to amend it."

Do you really mean 2000 - 22 years ago - or is that a typo? Unless you just filed your 2000 tax return with the last few years, you would not amend such an old return.

If you meant a more recent year, tell us what year it is and answer the questions that xmasbaby0 asked. Also, how much of a difference is there between the original and corrected amounts?

2000?  if you are due a refund it's too late to claim. if you owe you need to pay. however, not all changes on a W-2 require filing an amended return. we need to know the boxes and their description since some have changed over the past 22 years.

Sorry, I meant 2020. The new info is a change to the Social Security Tax Withheld.

Yes, it is for 2020. It is the difference of under $2,000 for the social security tax withheld.

It's an increase in the Social Security tax withheld for just under $2,000 for the year 2020.

Would the amount they changed it for end up putting you over the maximum amount of SS withholding for 2020?

  2020  $8537.40

If box 4, Social Security tax withheld, is the only change on the W-2c, it does not affect your 2020 tax return unless you had more than one employer in 2020. If you had only one employer in 2020 do not file an amended return.

If you had more than one employer in 2020, the W-2c does not affect your tax return unless the total amount of Social Security tax withheld from all jobs in 2020 is more than $8,537.40. Add up the amount in box 4 of all your 2020 W-2s, using the corrected amount on the W-2c for that job. If the total is $8,537.40 or less, do not file an amended return. If the total is more than $8,537.40, you had excess Social Security tax withheld, and the increase on the W-2c produced or increased the excess. You should file an amended return to get a refund of the added excess Social Security tax withheld.

If you filed as married filing jointly for 2020, add up only the box 4 amounts for the person who got the W-2c. Do not include the other person's W-2s.

I had one employer. The previously reported was $4,126 and the new increase would make it $5,992. So it sounds like since it's under $8537.50, then I would not need to take any action. Correct?

Correct.  The change in withholding for SS does not have any effect on your tax due or refund.  Just save that W-2C for your own records.
