I received a paper from the IRS in regards to sending back up w2 form to them. They are wanting back up from line 40 on my paper and im noticing the # amount is differen

im  confused . why would that number be different?

There are two possible answers:

  1. There was a typo in the data entry from your W-2. If you imported the data, it's possible that your company issued a corrected W-2, but that's not the one that was imported. If you typed the info yourself, then perhaps you made a typo.
  2. There are other W-2s or estimated tax payments connected with your account.

Send the IRS exactly what they are requesting, and mail it to the address in the letter. They often request that you include a copy of the letter they sent you. If they make corrections to your tax return, they will let you know by mail, and you will have the opportunity to contest those corrections.
