I received a letter from the IRS saying that they are auditing my 2017 return. Will this stop my refund before I send in documents?

2017, or 2016? It's early for 2017 audits.

If IRS is looking at 2017, they are holding any refund on 2017, until they can determine the refund is correct.
The sooner you send in what documents they need off you will be. Do not send originals, and only send copies and sent it to exact address and place they requested with the cover sheet attached to who exactly requested it.
That may speed up the process slightly.
