I received a letter from the IRS notifying me of a Tax Withheld difference between my 2019 Form 1040 and information from other sources (i.e. my employer). Process?

When I did my 2019 taxes, I uploaded my employer W2 automatically in TurboTax.  Line 17 has 33,808.  The letter indicates that 30,534 was reported.  How could a difference have happened?  The IRS guided me to submit a 1040X.  Is this straight forward to resolve?

Sometimes when forms are imported mistakes in transmission can occur and it's always a good idea to double check the form entries.

Yes - amend your 2019 return to include the correct withholding amount.  Please follow the steps in this TurboTax Help article:  How do I amend a 2019 return in TurboTax?

Check your copy of the 2019 return to see what was reported.  Line 17 of the W-2 is State Income Tax and I'm surprised that the IRS would look at that number.

Thank you very much for your reply.  On my 2019 W-2, Box 2 (Federal income tax withheld) has $30,534.72.  This is what the IRS letter says as well.  But on my actual 2019 1040 (prepared using TurboTax and W-2 uploaded using TurboTax), line 17 (and line 20) has $33,808.  How this might have happened is one thing (?) but my main question is how I should resolve the issue.  Is the 1040X process straight forward?  Thank you.  Dan

Thank you again.  What a 'bummer' but I will begin the (TurboTax) online amend process right away.  Dan
