Your energy-efficient heating system may qualify for a credit of up to $300 for a qualifying heat pump or biomass stove and up to $150 for a qualifying furnace (plus up to $50 for a circulating fan). Unfortunately, the tax credit for energy-efficient appliances is not available to the consumer.
Since you purchased the heating system in 2015, yes, you would need to amend your 2015 tax return to claim the credit. Remember that the energy credit has a combined lifetime limit of $500, so if you claimed a credit before 2015 the amount of your 2015 credit may be reduced. See IRS Instructions for Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits for more information.
Can I claim energy-efficient appliances or energy-saving home improvements?
