I overlooked an estimated payment and overpaid on federal tax, should I file an amendment or wait for the IRS to notice the mistake?

this is for 2016 and I already efiled and made the payment due online. The estimated payment was made on EFTPS in December

I overlooked an estimated payment and overpaid on federal tax, should I file an amendment or wait for the IRS to notice the mistake?

The IRS SHOULD catch this and send your payment back as a refund.  The IRS will correct mathematical errors automatically so you do not have to amend the return- however, if you do not get the refund in three to four weeks, I would recommend calling them.  (and it will be after tax season so less busy on their phone lines)
