To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
Start the 2022 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.
On the Tax Home webpage -
Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents. Click on the Year 2021 and Click on Amend (change) 2021 return
If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.
If you used TurboTax Online, simply log in to your account ( with the same User ID and password you used for your 2021 return) and select “Amend a return that was filed and accepted.” If you used our CD/download product, sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.” You must file a separate Form 1040-X for each tax return you are amending.
Your amended return for 2021 would have to be printed, signed, & mailed in.
Some users get confused when amending and try to e-file the 1040X---but it is too late to e-file your amended 2021 return. Only certain paid tax pros can still e-file an amended 2021 return, so as Champ bluedeb mentioned, you will have to file it by mail.
Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since you will have a long wait for it to be processed.
Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six to nine months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:
