I need to amend my 1098-T form. My FAFSA is based on my mother's info. To amend 1098-T, can I use my father's info or does it have to be my mother's? (They're separate)

As of the time my mother helped me with the FAFSA, she was my custodial parent. I'm now an adult second year in college so that is now void. My mother has an extension on her taxes until this October. To amend my 1098-T form, could I have my father supply his information or does the information have to come from the FAFSA filing parent of the previous year?

Your question doesn't make sense as written.

A 1098-T is a tuition statement issued by your college, you can't change it.  If you think it is wrong, you have to contact the college.

You may have filed a tax return, that included the 1098-T, along with information about your other income, deductions and credits, and that tax return might have claimed credits based on the tuition you paid and other factors.

Your 2022 tax return should be filed according to your tax situation from Jan 1-Dec 31, 2022.  You can't change it because you want to or because it would be strategic to do so.  Your tax return must be based on the actual facts that occurred in 2022.  The FAFSA is an application for financial aid for a future year that is based, in part, on your income tax situation from the previous year.  If your situation has changed, you may be able to explain that in the FAFSA or to a financial aid counselor at your school, but you can't change your tax return with the IRS if it was correct at the time.  You might also be able to file a revised FAFSA application if your situation has changed, I don't know your options in that case.  But you can't change your tax return if it was correct before.

@amw020803-gmail- what are you trying to accomplosh?

Even though you may be an adult, it doesn't mean your parent can't claim you on their taxes.  That 1098-T form is the basis of capturing tax credits - and that is all.

if one of your parents is claiming you, the form is for them to use.

if no one else is claiming you, the form is for your to use to claim the credit (however, in most circumstances, you would not be eligible)

"I'm now an adult second year in college"

You can be claimed as a qualified child dependent on a parent's tax return until the tax year in which you turn 24 if you are a full-time student.  The parent who can claim you is also the person who can get the education credit on their tax return.   You can file your own tax return, but must say on your own return that someone else can claim you as a dependent.

Here are the rules that the parent who may claim you can use:

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2022 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $4,400 in 2022.  (For 2023 it will be $4700)
  • You provided more than half of their financial support

In addition:

If you can be claimed as a dependent and you answer the question in My Info incorrectly, here is what happens if you e-file first:  Your Social Security number goes into the IRS system as having been used.  When your parents try to e-file, their e-file is rejected and they will find it impossible to e-file their own tax return.  Then they will have to print, sign and mail their return and wait for months for it to be processed.  You, meanwhile, will have to file an amended tax return on a special form called a 1040X, which also takes months for the IRS to process.  So make sure you know the correct answer to "Can anyone claim you as a dependent on their tax return?"
