Education expenses for grades K-12 are not deductible on a federal tax return.

You remove a dependent in the My Info section of the program.  Click on My Info on the left side of the online program screen.

If you already filed, you can only make changes by filing a Amended return (1040X).

This should be done AFTER the original return has been processed.

If you claimed your older son, but he is NOT your dependent, your older son can file a return, but he won't be able to e-fie and claim himself, he will need to print and mail his return. He won't be able to e-file this season since his exemption has already been claimed. Even after you amend, he will not be able to e-file this season.

If he is your dependent, you really should claim him, you can't just agree to let him claim himself if he is your dependent. But if he isn't, again you need to file an amendment and he needs to paper file and mail his return.

If the tuition is for a K-12 school, you may be able to claim that on your state tax return depending on the state you file in. That can be done at the same time you amend the federal return, in fact when you amend the federal and remove your older son, you will need to amend the state return as well if you file one.

If the tuition is for a private college, you can claim that expense on the federal return and possible get an education credit.

Below is information on Amending a return using TurboTax:

You have 3 years from the date you filed your return (or 2 years after you paid the tax due, whichever is later) to file an amended return.
