You cannot change it.... If you e-filed then your return is in pending. The IRS does not allow you to touch it while it is in pending.
MY RETURN IS IN PENDING—what does that mean?
Did you e-file? Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?” If so, your return is now in “pending” on a server. Do not try to change anything while your return is in pending. By January 24 the IRS will begin to accept/reject e-files. If your return is rejected you will be able to make corrections before re-filing. If the return you e-filed is accepted you will have to wait until it has been fully processed and then amend it to fix your mistake.
Look at your Form 1040 and see what is on line 30. That is where the recovery rebate credit for the stimulus is shown. If you messed up and said you did not receive it but you really did receive the stimulus, the IRS will catch your mistake and correct it for you. But expect a delay in processing if they have to find and fix your mistake.
You can't make any changes if you already submitted your return.
You must wait until the IRS either accepts or rejects your return.
If the IRS rejects your return, you can make the changes and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, you have to wait until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund then, you can prepare an amended tax return.
