I may have entered an incorrect amount on my overtime amount. I think the new tax law that covers no tax on overtime only pertains to a portion of the amount I entered.

The amount I provided for overtime may be calculated incorrectly

The deduction is for the overtime premium, which is the portion over your regular pay. For example, if you are paid time and a half for overtime, you have to divide the overtime amount by 3 to obtain the overtime premium.

I entered the full amount of overtime and I did not divide the amount by 3 on my return. Should I amend it or does TurboTax automatically calculate?

It depends.  TurboTax can calculate, but you would have had to tell it to do so.

After you enter the amount for your OT, you are asked several questions.  There is an option to tell TurboTax that you will enter the amount because you already know it and then there is an option to let TurboTax calculate it for you.  If you picked the option that said you already know the amount, then TurboTax would not have made any changes to the amount you entered.

If you did not already file, then you can simply go back and make the changes by going back to the Income Summary Screen and clicking the pencil next to the W-2 that the OT was earned with.  After you do that, you can either correct the amount you entered by saying you know how much and entering the correct amount, or you can let TurboTax calculate it for you.

If you did already file, then yes, you can amend your return to correct the number.  When you click on the amend button, you will see the refund/amount due reset to $0.  Since you are lowering a deduction, it is very possible that you will then see an amount due.  If you had a refund, this is simply an repayment of the overpayment. You are paying back the IRS because you received too much of a refund.  If you had a tax due, it means you paid too little by this amount.

It is best to wait until your return has been fully processed before amending your return.

Also, if your employer had the amount in box 14, be sure before you amend or make any changes that it was not just the OT premium.  If it was, then there would be no changes that needed to be made.
