I'm filing a paper copy but haven't sent in. I hit the file return button. I made a mistake and want to change an item before I send it, but it appears I have to make it a amended return? Is there any way to not make it an amended return, since it really

Do NOT click the Amend return link/button!  That will mess up your return.

You do NOT amend a return that hasn't been filed.  You just need to open it back up and make any changes prior to filing.

As long as you have not actually efiled or mailed the return, here's how to open it back up to make changes:

• Log in and go to your 2016 Tax Timeline.
• If TurboTax thinks you are finished, there will be no orange "Take me to my return" button.
• So in that case, scroll down to "Some things you can do."
• Choose "Add a State."  (you don't really add one; that's just to get the return to open up.)
• Once the return is open, you can continue working on the return.
• Then go through the REVIEW tab prior to filing.
