I just finalized my return but realized that there is a difference in the exemption number on my W-2 and my 1040A. How can I change the form?

To change the exemptions related to your W-2, you will need to contact your employer and complete a Form W-4 (Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate) that tells them how much federal tax they should withhold from your paycheck.

This may be equivalent to the exemptions that are filed on your Form 1040-A. You receive an exemption on Form 1040-A for each person on your tax return (ie yourself, your spouse or your dependents). If you need to change your exemptions on your return, add any qualifying dependents, your spouse (if any) or remove any dependents that do not qualify.

  • Login to TurboTax online
  • Click Take me to my return
  • Click the Personal Info Tab, then scroll down and click Add A Dependent
