I haven't finished my amendments. I turned away to look for some documents, when back to the computer it appeared that my tax return is filed to IRS. How can I cancel it?

If this is your first time filing this year, there are multiple steps before an e-file and perhaps it timed out but did not actually e-file. TurboTax will send you an email to confirm your return was e-filed and then to give a status update. If you do not see an email, please check the spam folder on your email account as some mail providers put the return updates there and it might vary year to year.  The email will tell you if the federal was accepted or rejected and if it was rejected, what needs to be changed.

Or please click here for a TurboTax tool to check your federal e-file status.

If you had filed previously and it was accepted, then the IRS will not accept additional e-files this year and amendments are filed by mail, so you can open the return back up and proceed.

If you have not e-filed or mailed your forms, you can indeed to back and make changes to the original return and not have to wait to amend.

Please go back to TurboTax and under Your tax returns & documents (you may need to click Show to the right if it is hidden) check that the correct year is highlighted and select that you need to either amend your return or to add a stateYou do not actually need to complete either of those, but if you select one, it will open your return back up for editing.  Go to the left menu and click on the Federal or State and this will open the federal return so you may add your information and then proceed back to File, on the left menu.

If you are using Windows 10 and some buttons don't work or fields won't accept entry, this TurboTax FAQ has step-by-step instructions to help.
