I have already filed my federal taxes for 2020 and received my refund. Now the amount of my federal refund is higher than it was when I filed.

I filed my taxes a couple of weeks ago.  I keep getting emails saying my state return is incomplete.  However, in my state, you don't have to file for state.  I chose the skip filing state option (as instructed to do) but it is still showing as incomplete.  Now my federal refund amount is showing as higher than what it was when I filed a couple of weeks ago.

Your state return will show "Incomplete" if the federal return was filed by itself.  If you don't have to file a state return, just ignore the message.

If you federal refund is higher than it was, perhaps there were changes in the tax laws that affected (like the treatment of unemployment benefitrs).

So if my tax refund is actually higher than what I received what do I need to do to get what I'm owed?

It depends.

Did you have unemployment income reported on your 2020 income tax return?

If so, it is possible.  The IRS is still determining how the returns already filed will be treated.  At this point, they are requesting taxpayers do not file an amended return.  Once they issue guidance, the IRS will issue a statement informing taxpayers on what needs to be done, if anything.
