No you cannot ever add 2021 income to a 2022 tax return. You will need to amend your 2021 return to include the unemployment received in 2021. Wait until the 2021 return has been fully processed and then send in an amended return.
Thank you so much for the info. However, the link you provided does not open.
Where do I go to amend my 2021 return?
Sorry for the dead link. Working on finding a better one.
Thank you so much for your help. I downloaded the file to amend and amended the return. The problem now is it's not giving me a copy of the amended return. I went through the entire process and all the updates and changes. But when I try to print, it shows the original return to print, not the amended. It acts like it saved the amended return but I can't find it anywhere so I can print it out and mail it in. Please help!
You have been an absolute great help and I thank you again! I didn't scan through the whole file and thought it was the original return.
Thank you for your knowledge and help with this! I never had to amend a return and it's great learning new things!
Have a great evening! Stay blessed and safe!
😊🙏
@jhamster521 You are welcome....and you do know that it has to be mailed, right? Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since it will take a long time for them to process it.
Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six to nine months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:
https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1
Yes, I'm sending it certified mail in the morning (since the post office was closed today) so I have a record of them receiving it. There's no rush on the refund cause the amended return now shows I owe them lol. I just want to make sure they get the amended return, send me a notice and then I'll make the payment. Trust me, there's no rush at all!
Um...you do not have to wait for a notice from the IRS. You can see how much you owe on line 20 your 1040X and can pay it when you mail the tax return. You can enclose a check or money order with the tax return or you can pay it on the IRS site:
From the IRS
Line 20—Amount You Owe See the “Amount you owe” section in your income tax return instructions or go to IRS.gov/Payments for payment options. If you elected to apply any part of an overpayment on your original return to your next year's estimated tax, you can’t reverse that election on your amended return.
You should include a check for the tax due. Or the IRS might send you a bill with interest. Or go online to pay it. Pay the IRS directly at
Ok I will do that. Now, since the amended amount is not yet on my account online, can I still make a payment even though it's not currently showing a balance owed?
