Some delays have been noticed this year primarily due to one of the following:
- The IRS has selected your return for identification verification (ID Verify)
- Form 8962 was not reported for a Form 1095-A from a Marketplace health insurance plan
- Return is in review by the IRS
- Form 8379 for Injured Spouse Allocation was used - this can take up to 14 weeks to process
While you should receive a letter for the first three of those reasons, you can contact the IRS, a local assistance center or a taxpayer advocate after 21 days for more information and assistance. If you suspect your refund is being held, people have made progress using a taxpayer advocate.
You can contact the IRS directly at the phone number below:
Telephone Assistance for Individuals:
Toll-Free, 800-829-1040
Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. your local time (Alaska
& Hawaii follow Pacific Time).
