Did you efile or mail your return? They didn't start opening the mail until June that's been stacking up. Back in March the IRS closed their processing centers and stopped processing mailed tax returns.
See this IRS page for the latest information
https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue

If you efiled....Was your return Accepted? First double check your efile status here
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

When you efile you get back 2 emails. The first email only confirms the transmission. The second email says if the IRS (or state) Accepted or Rejected your efile.

Then only the IRS can tell you. IRS Where's my refund https://www.irs.gov/refunds/
Make sure you are using the refund amount from your actual federal tax return and not the combined amount Turbo Tax showed you at the end. That was for federal and state combined.

When you log into your account you should also see the status and if it was Accepted or Rejected, Started, Printed, Ready to Mail, etc.  what does it say?

When will you get your refund,

I haven't received my federal refund either. I e-filed in June through Turbotax, and my federal and state returns were all accepted a day or two later. I received my state refunds immediately, but haven't gotten my federal refund - the "Where's my refund?" tool on the IRS website says that my return is still being processed, and a refund date will be posted when available.

My partner and I both e-filed (through Turbotax) on the same day. He didn't have any delays in receiving his federal or state refunds.

This is frustrating. The IRS is paying interest on delayed refunds (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/coronavirus-tax-relief-2019-tax-refund-interest), which sounds nice, but the website says the average payout is only $18  -- AND they are going to tax you on it, requiring you to complete an additional form (1099-INT) when you file taxes again next year.

It is impossible to get a human on the phone at the IRS, as usual (or even more so than usual)...I can't even wait on hold forever because after going through the automated phone menu/system, I get a recording that says they are experiencing a high call volume and can't take my call - I should try again later or use the online refund tracker tool.  Cool, thanks IRS.

Question: can you re-e-file the return as an amended tax return without changing any information? Will that raise any red flags, or have any future implications when filing taxes? I paid for Turbotax, dangit - isn't this part of what we are purchasing...?

Good luck!

Then the IRS got it and is working on it.  Sorry you just have to keep waiting.  Everything is taking longer this year due to Covid-19.

If you wish, you can phone the IRS and see if they can tell you anything about the delay, but it may not be easy.  Part of it is luck.    Due to the Coronavirus, some of the IRS call centers had been closed for a few months, some are operating with reduced personnel, and others are gradually opening back up.  Users have been reporting that they are finally now reaching someone.    Here is the normal method to reach a live IRS agent when they are operating smoothly.

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
  • Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.
  • I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.
