I filed my taxes bvack in early january and it is now mid may. where are my tax returns I need the money.

When you efile you get back 2 emails.  The first email only confirms the transmission.  The second email says if the IRS (or state) Accepted or Rejected your efile.  When you log into your account you should also see the status and if it was Accepted or Rejected, Started, Printed, Ready to Mail, etc.  what does it say?

Make sure you are using the refund amount from your actual federal tax return and not the combined amount Turbo Tax showed you at the end.  That was for federal and state combined.

It says ready to mail, but I made it so it can get straight to my checking account.
There is no way it takes 4 months to get to my checking

Did you print and mail your return back in January?  Did you get a tracking number from the post office?

Sorry but Printed or Ready to Mail means you have to print out your return and mail it to the IRS yourself. So it has not been filed yet. How to change from Mail to Efile https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/5561257 Turbo Tax will always say Ready to Mail. They don't know if or when you actually mailed it. And the IRS doesn't tell Turbo Tax when they get a mailed return.

If I want to change it to mail now instead of e-file is that okay even though its way past April 15th? Because for some reason it says "the control number field must contain a minimum of 2 alpha or numeric character(s) and on my W-2 I only had 1. Should I just mail it in or contact my ex-employer. When I first got done filing I selected the method of payment and it said "congratualtions you have filed your 2018 taxes you should get your return in 21 days or less."

Yes you can just print and mail it now.  If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for filing late.  You don't need the control number.  You can just skip that, leave it blank.    Then you can try Efiling again.
