Hello early bird ... the IRS will not start accepting returns until 1/24 so it will remain in a pending mode until then. If you are picked for a "test" batch you may get an acceptance earlier however no return will start processing until 1/24 at the earliest and if your return had EIC or CTC on it then it will not start processing until mid to late February at best.
You cannot change your tax return after you have submitted it, even though it's still pending. If you're lucky, your tax return will be rejected when the IRS starts processing next week. Then you will be able to correct the stimulus payment when you fix the reason for the rejection, and resubmit the tax return. If your tax return is accepted, you will have to wait until the IRS completely finishes processing it and sends you any refund that is due. Then you can file an amended return (Form 1040-X) to make the correction. Since you entered the wrong stimulus amount, it might take many months for your tax return to be processed, but the IRS might also correct the stimulus amount for you, saving you the trouble of filing an amended return.
This is an example of why we try to discourage people from rushing to submit their tax returns early, before the IRS even starts accepting tax returns.
No, I'm afraid not. It is pending because the IRS hasn't started accepting returns yet, not because it hasn't been sent. When the IRS opens on the 24th it will show immediately as sent and then will eventually either be accepted or rejected by the IRS.
The change in stimulus will delay processing of your return but they will eventually process it with the correct refund amount.
