I filed my 2017 taxes and owed for federal. I paid the federal taxes owed - the check cleared my bank account to the IRS. I received corrected Form 1098 and filed an amendment to claim the "MIP" (box 5). Should I expect a refund for the taxes I already paid + refund now due to me as a result of my amendment?

The amended return assumes the original balance due has already been paid, any refund shown on the amended return is a refund of the original monies paid in.
Amended returns can only be printed, signed and mailed in for processing, they can take anywhere from 12-20 weeks to complete processing and that refunded amount be issued.
