Normally it's best to wait on the original Federal refund to arrive before amending, in case the IRS changes anything in the original return.     The Amended Return Form 1040X cannot be efiled; it has to be printed and mailed.   If you didn't actually print and mail the Amended Return Form 1040X, you should wait until you get your original refund and see if you need to revise the amended return before submitting.

In any case, if you no longer have the bank account you submitted for direct deposit on the original return, your original refund should bounce back to the IRS who will issue you a paper check in the mail.

If you were due additional refund on the amended return, it does not come by direct deposit.   Refunds from an amended return come by check in the mail.

NOTE:  Here's a special circumstance that could come into play if it applies to you:

Did you have any TurboTax product fees?   If you did, and if you chose to pay any TurboTax fees out of your Federal refund, that is handled by an intermediary bank.    Your original refund would go first from the IRS to that intermediary bank, where the fees are subtracted.  That intermediary bank would then try the deposit to your closed bank account. The attempted direct deposit should bounce back to that intermediary bank, who would issue you a check in the mail less a $20 service fee.   If you did not have any fees that you paid by this method, then this will not apply to you.

Did you get your original refund prior to amending?
