Don't amend your tax return, at least not yet. The IRS will probably detect the error and correct it without you having to do anything.
Was the amount that you entered for the Economic Impact Payment higher or lower than the amount you actually received?
On the tax return that you filed, did you have a refund or a payment due?
Was your e-file accepted?
I entered a higher payment because it was very suggestive that I would have gotten that amount. After reviewing the Letter 6475, I noticed it was smaller.
I received a refund
and my efile has been accepted with refund recieved
If you are married you would each get letter 6475 for half. Did you check your bank account to see how much you actually got starting in March 2021? So line 30 was blank?
Yes, the suggested amount on Turbo Tax that I received was $4,200 (which is what I went with) however my Letter 6475 stated my EIP was $2800.
Yes line 30 was blank on my tax form
Did you have 2 dependents on your 2020 return? Your spouse should have also received a letter 6475. I think the 2800 was only half of what you actually got. Each spouse probably got a letter for 2800, total = 5600 (1400 for 4 people).
Double check your bank statements and Check your IRS account (both accounts if married)
I forgot to enter the last Economic Impact payment on my return. How do I handle this?
If you filed with a wrong amount on line 30 for the 3rd Stimulus payment Recovery Rebate Credit you do not need to amend. The IRS will automatically correct that and reduce your refund or send you a bill. Just wait and see what the IRS does. It will delay your return.
@VolvoGirl - while true that if you file the wrong amount for Line 30 (or Line 28) as a result of understating what was received from the IRS during 2021, the IRS will correct the error and reduce the refund / increase the tax due accordingly.
However, if the OPPOSITE occurs, i.e. the taxpayer overstates what they received for either the stimulus or the advance child tax credit, the IRS will do nothing! An amendment is the only way to correct the error.
