Once you file a tax return, it will be processed and the refund will be issued to you.  So you will be getting the $796 back.  Therefore, your amended return reflects the change from your original return. So, yes, you owe $168 with the amended return. 

The net affect will be that you got a refund of $628, but this will occur in the two transactions -- refund of $796 and a tax due payment of $168.
