I completed an amended return to be mailed in, and while I have printed the forms, I have not put them in the mail yet. How can I change my amended return back to e-file?

An amended return can't be e-filed. You only amend a return after you have e-filed your original. If you have not filed your original return, and want to continue with that you can delete the amended return. If you have already filed your original return and need to make changes to it, then you amend and mail it in.

Apologies I didn’t make this clear when I originally posed the question, but I did e-file my original 2021 tax return. When I received my corrected w-2 from my employer that prompted me to amend my return, I was under the impression that the amended return could not be e-filed, so I selected the option to have them printed and then mail them in. Before mailing off the documents, I learned that a 2021 amended return can be e-filed per the IRS website. Is there anyway that I can switch my amended return back to e-file?

IRS does allow the option of filing by mail or e-file for the amended tax return. TurboTax provides both methods as well and the instructions below should help you change your selection.

As long as you haven't already mailed your 2021 paper return, you can switch to the e-filing method (through April 18, 2022). However, some states now require e-filing, which means the federal and state must be e-filed together.  

1. In TurboTax Online, sign in to your account
2. Select Tax Home in the left menu
3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents
4. Select 2021, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just gets you into the right area)
5. Select File in the left menu (expand your browser window if you don't see this, or select the menu icon in the top left corner)
6. On the Just one more step screen, follow steps 1 and 2 if you haven't already
7. Select the Start button to the right of Step 3
8. On the Let's get ready to e-file screen, select I want to e-file
9. Follow the instructions to e-file your return
