I called the IRS to report in my bank account number was wrong, but the bank had accepted it. How do I check the status now?

Call the bank.  If your name was not on the account, the bank would have not accepted the direct deposit of the refund.

Was this for a direct deposit of your refund or for direct debit of a payment that you owed?

I'm not sure what you want to check. It seems that you know the status. You said that the bank accepted the transaction. If that's true, and it was a refund, the money is in the account that you specified in your tax return. If it was a payment, the payment was made from the account that you specified.
