I am preparing a first Federal filing for my son and turbo tax said "you can't efile, but we will help you prepare and print", but it never gave me the option. why?

You have not mentioned how old he is. I think it will not let them e-file if they are too young, and the return will have to be filed by mail instead.

Too young----under 16 at end of 2023
