I am not sure if I claimed student loan interest the last few years. I tried looking under documents. Where can I find this information?

In your 2018 tax return, the student loan interest deduction would be shown on line 33 of Schedule 1. In your 2017 or earlier tax return, it would be on line 18 of form 1040A or line 33 of form 1040. If you filed form 1040EZ in any 2017 or earlier years, you did not claim the student loan interest deduction.

You would have received 1098-E forms from the financial institution that is holding your loan.  But were is reported on your Form 1040 will differ depending on which year's return you are looking at.  The form has been redesigned over the past few years.

2019 - Line 20 (Schedule 1)

2018 - Line 33 (Schedule 1)

2017 and before - Line 18 (1040A) or Line 33 (1040)
