I am 39, single and unemployed. In 2018 I had around 8k of money come in from odd jobs and selling a things online. Do I need to file taxes because I’ve read that I dont?

It depends. 

If at least $400 of your $8,000 came from self-employment type work, you'll need to file a tax return.

Otherwise, most likely not.
